Getting There

You can access the North West Bay River Trail from the Huon Highway and Sandfly Road intersection - go past the carparking beside the highway towards the bus stop and look out for the signage. You can also access the trail from the end of Riverdale Road (limited parking on road verge - please do no park in the turning circle). You can also park at the Sandfly Hall or Sandfly Oval (toilets and water available at both locations). Note: The section of trail that links from Sandfly Oval to the North West Bay River Trail is walking only (no bikes or horses).

Join the North West Bay River as it nears the end of a 25 km journey, beginning at kunyani/Mt Wellington and finishing in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Margate. As the trail winds its way through the landscape, you will be taken through a diverse range of scenic backdrops, including intact bushland with threatened species, dramatic rocky outcrops, waterholes and small farming communities. The trail is shared use for walkers, runners, mountain bikers and horse riders and involves two natural river crossings when water level is low. Distance: The trail is 3.1 km from the Huon Highway to Riverdale Road (two river crossings required). 1.7 km to Sandfly Rd from the Huon Highway (no river crossings) - note the section from the Sandfly Oval to the North West Bay River is walking only (no bikes/horses). Walking Time: 45 minutes from the Huon Highway to Riverdale Rd 30 minutes from the Huon Highway to Sandfly Oval.

Toilets

Parking at the Huon Highway/Sandfly Road intersection car park, Riverdale Road (on grass verge) or at Sandfly Oval or Sandfly Hall. Horse floats are recommended to park at either the Sandfly Hall or Riverdale Rd (being mindful of residents' driveways and access).

Toilets and water are located at Sandfly Oval and Sandfly Hall. There is a small shop and petrol station at Sandfly.

Safety Precautions

Water crossingHorse Riding

There are two natural river crossings required when the water level is low over stepping stones. Rocks can be slippery. Bike riders will need to carry bikes across. Do not attempt to cross the river if the rocks are covered by water and after heavy rain. Due to the trail being shared use, please be mindful of other users and follow shared use trail etiquette.
